PITTSBURGH, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Pfizer said on Friday it will sell its popular heartburn medication Lasix to generic drug makers.
"This is the latest in a series of major announcements by Pfizer," Pfizer's medical sales manager, Dr. Jane Smith, said in a statement. "The Company announced it would buy Novartis AG's Lasix portfolio, and the company would also buy GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for $750 million."
Pfizer said the deal will add about 10 new drugs to its pipeline, with the drugs expected to be prescribed in the United States, Japan and Canada by 2017.
The announcement came on the company's first sales announcement since Pfizer's announcement last month that it had agreed to buy Novartis for $750 million.
GSK's $750 million deal with Novartis comes after the company announced on Dec. 9 that it would buy its top-selling drug Lasix, which is used to treat people with a blood disorder.
Pfizer said it would add about 10 new drugs to its pipeline. The company said it expects to make the drugs in the next few months.
"We have a portfolio of products which are very similar to Lasix, but have fewer side effects," Smith said. "This is a significant milestone in our pipeline, and we will continue to work with the companies to achieve this."
The company's announcement comes amid a growing focus on the pharmaceutical industry, which has been under attack for its ability to make generic medicines effective against a growing number of diseases.
GSK said it expects to make the drugs in the next three years, though it said it would only make the drugs in two years.
